Interstate Moving Checklist: Your Guide To Moving States

Moving interstate is an exciting time, but any move, let alone an interstate move, can be extremely stressful. There are so many things to think about and if you forget something, you can’t simply turn around and go back.

For moving, checklists help, so we’ve used our experience from hundreds of interstate moves to develop this handy checklist for moving interstate. Use this list to get organised and plan your move so that everything goes to plan.

Interstate Removals Checklist

Declutter Unwanted Items

Moving house is a great time to get rid of all that unwanted clutter you’ve accumulated. You don’t want to pay to transport all this stuff across the country when you don’t need it. So have a good sort-out and get rid of anything you don’t want anymore. You can sell unwanted items on eBay, Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree or hold a garage sale.

If nothing else, this will bring in some extra money to pay for the move.

Pack Ahead Of Time

Packing is one of the most important things to get right. Good packing makes all the difference to whether a move goes to plan or not, so make sure you plan your packing ahead of time. Arrange Utilities

An interstate move will mean you have to arrange new utility suppliers. You should do this well ahead of moving day to give yourself some breathing space.

If your plans change, and they frequently do, make sure you contact the relevant utility companies to reschedule. You don’t want your electricity going off the day before the move!

Enrol Your Children In School/Childcare

Families with school-age children should make sure they are enrolled in their new school long before moving day. Ideally, you should do this as soon as your move is confirmed because competition for places at good schools is fierce. Don’t leave this until the last minute or until after you arrive, even if you plan to move during the summer holidays.

Families with young children should also arrange childcare in their new state. Much like schools, this should be done well ahead of time. Childcare places at the best facilities are limited, which means long waiting lists for families that get in late.

Transfer Medical Records

You will need to ensure your family medical records are transferred to your new medical practitioner. Depending on your medical history, your doctor will either provide you with a summary of your medical history or arrange for copies to be sent directly to your new doctor.

Update Your Insurance

Make sure you update your insurance policies a few weeks before moving. At a minimum, you will need to update your home, car, and health insurance policies. Most companies have procedures in place to simplify this process. Check your insurance provider’s website for more details.

Redirect Your Mail

Don’t forget to have your mail redirected. This is easy to do, but also easy to forget. You will need to complete a mail redirection form with Australia Post. You can choose how long you want your mail to be redirected, with one, three, six and twelve-month options available.

Notify Financial Institutions

In most cases, you won’t need to change bank accounts when moving interstate, but you will need to notify your existing bank of your new address. Any credit/debit cards you hold outside your main bank will also need notifying. In most cases, this can be done easily online but you will need prorf of ID and residence.
